10mm vs. 14mm vs. 18mm: How to Choose the Right Joint Size
Buying a replacement bowl or banger should not be a guessing game. Two accessories can look almost identical and still have different fittings. To find the right match, check three details: joint size, joint type, and joint angle.
This guide explains the common 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm glass joint sizes and how to avoid ordering an accessory that does not fit.
What does glass joint size mean?
The joint is the connection where a removable accessory meets your glass piece or downstem. Its size describes the fitting, not the height of the piece, the diameter of the bowl, or the thickness of the glass.
Common accessory listings use 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. You may also see 14.5mm or 18.8mm in product specifications. These are often sold under the rounded 14mm and 18mm categories, but always check the manufacturer's compatibility information rather than assuming every similarly labeled fitting is interchangeable.
10mm vs. 14mm vs. 18mm joints
10mm joints
A 10mm fitting is the smallest of these three common sizes. It appears on some compact glass pieces. A 14mm accessory will not fit directly into a 10mm joint, even if the accessory otherwise looks suitable.
14mm joints
A 14mm fitting is a common option across glass pieces and replacement accessories. If your piece has a 14mm joint, start with accessories listed as compatible with that size, then verify the fitting type and angle.
For example, our 14mm Flat Top Quartz Banger has a 14mm male joint and a 90° angle. Check that your piece has a compatible 14mm female connection and the correct joint orientation before choosing it.
18mm joints
An 18mm fitting is larger and appears on some larger glass pieces. Do not choose it simply because your piece is tall: overall height does not reliably tell you the joint size.
Looking for a replacement flower bowl? Our 18mm Clear Bowl is an option to consider for an 18mm setup. It features glass marbles along the lip for added grip. Confirm the fitting type and compatibility with your water pipe before ordering.
Male vs. female glass joints
Size is only half of the connection. The two ends must also have complementary fitting types.
- A male joint has a projecting, tapered fitting that inserts into another joint.
- A female joint has an opening that accepts a male fitting.
A piece with a 14mm female joint generally needs a compatible 14mm male accessory. A piece with a 14mm male joint generally needs a compatible 14mm female accessory. Check the connection where the accessory actually attaches, especially if your setup includes a removable downstem or an adapter.
How to identify your joint size
- Check the original listing or packaging. Manufacturer specifications are the best starting point.
- Check your current accessory. A known, correctly fitting accessory can help identify the replacement size and fitting type.
- Measure carefully if specifications are missing. Glass joints are tapered, so measuring at different points produces different readings. Use calipers as a reference and compare with the manufacturer's measurement guidance. A rough ruler measurement alone may not distinguish the fitting reliably.
- Ask before buying if you are unsure. Send the seller a clear photo of the connection, any measurements, and the model name if you have it.
Never force an accessory into place. If it does not seat correctly, stop and check compatibility. Forcing a mismatched connection can damage the glass.
Does joint angle matter?
Yes, especially when choosing a banger. Listings commonly describe 45-degree and 90-degree options. The correct choice depends on the orientation of your piece's joint and the accessory design. Match the listed angle to your setup so the bucket sits in its intended position. A matching diameter does not guarantee a matching angle.
Can you use a joint adapter?
A compatible adapter can connect certain different sizes or fitting types. Check both ends of the adapter: each must match the part it connects to. An adapter also changes the height and placement of an accessory, which can affect clearance and stability. Choosing a directly compatible accessory is usually the simpler option.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 14mm bowl fit an 18mm joint?
Not directly as a proper match. You would need an appropriate adapter, or a bowl made for the 18mm fitting.
Are all 14mm accessories interchangeable?
No. You still need the correct male or female fitting, and the angle and surrounding clearance may matter.
Is a larger joint always better?
No. Joint size is first a compatibility requirement. It does not, by itself, determine the quality or suitability of the entire piece.
Your compatibility checklist
Before ordering, confirm the joint diameter, male or female fitting, angle where relevant, and space around the connection. Those checks are more useful than choosing by appearance alone, and they can save you the hassle of an incompatible replacement.
